17.12.2010 - Aviation stakeholders are scrutinising system design options

The work of close to 90 engineers from 23 companies is under the microscope as the official System Requirement Review (SRR) of the Iris ANTARES study is being conducted. ANTARES is the phase B study designing one of the options for a new satellite communication system for air traffic management (ATM), within the ESA Iris programme. Iris contributes to the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme.

The Review Board is scrutinising whether the designs proposed by the ANTARES team are technically sound, and whether ANTARES is sufficiently mature to start detailed design of, on one side, the communication protocols and the associated verification testbed and, on the other side, the satellite system infrastructure including the ground and space segments and user terminals to be used on-board aircraft. The board consists of ESA personnel under the authority of ESA's Inspector General and external reviewers representing the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), Eurocontrol, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Airbus and the ATM Satcom Safety Board.

The industrial team, has been working on the ANTARES design throughout 2010, performing the technical trade-off analyses on all elements of the system design. As SESAR is currently in the process of refining its requirements, the ANTARES team has had to deal with several unknowns such as the number of aircraft that will use the operational system, the maximum acceptable transit delay for the most urgent data exchanges, or whether specific data security mechanisms should be incorporated in the link.

08.11.2010 - Eurockot to launch ESA Earth observation mission SWARM

ESA has awarded a contract to Eurockot for the launch of the next Earth Explorer: Swarm, a constellation of three satellites to study Earth's magnetic field. The launch will take place from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in northern Russia using a Rockot launcher.

Swarm will be the fourth Earth Explorer satellite in orbit, following the Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE), launched by Eurockot in March 2009, the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite, also launched by Eurockot, in November 2009, and CryoSat, launched by Kosmotras in April 2010.

Download an Earth Explorers selection flyer

The series of Earth Explorer satellites provides a unique approach to observing Earth from space. Developed in direct response to issues raised by the scientific community, they improve our understanding of how the 'Earth system' works and the effect that human activity is having on natural processes.

The Swarm mission comprises three satellites, launched together, to provide high-precision and high-resolution measurements of the strength and direction of Earth's magnetic field. This will provide new insights into Earth's interior, further our understanding of atmospheric processes connected with climate and weather, and offer practical applications in areas such as space weather and radiation hazards.

The launch of Swarm is planned for before mid-2012. Although Rockot is a small launcher, it can deliver all three satellites into an orbit 490 km above Earth. © 2010 ESA

28.01.2010 - Order P3ITS, Workshop in ERTICO, Brussels

FP7 ICT4 project P3ITS Pre-commercial Public Procurement for ITS innovation and deployment: http://www.ertico.com/en/activities/infomobility/p3its.htm
P3ITS will establish a European network of expertise among principal stakeholders including public authority procurement agencies and industry.

Pre-commercial Public Procurement for ITS (P3ITS)

Pre-commercial procurement is an approach for procuring R&D services. The public sector in the EU, as elsewhere in the world, is faced with important societal challenges, in particular in the transport sector. Addressing such challenges requires new and innovative solutions, such as the development as cooperative mobility systems. Some of the required improvements are so technologically demanding that either no commercially stable solution yet exists on the market, or existing solutions exhibit shortcomings which require new R&D.

ERTICO is an International public/private partnership for Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) in Europe

By developing forward looking procurement strategies that include R&D procurement to develop new solutions that address these challenges, the public sector can have a significant impact on the mid- to long-term efficiency and effectiveness of public services as well as on the innovation performance and the competitiveness of European industry. Thus, by acting as technologically demanding first buyers of new R&D, public procurers can drive innovation from the demand side. Developing a strong European home market for innovative products and services is key for Europe to create growth and jobs in quickly evolving from R&D to markets in fields like ITS.

19.01.2010 - Sun Sets on Power-Challenged Russian Solar Observatory

The future doesn't look sunny for Russia's Coronas-Photon spacecraft, a solar observatory that has been having power system problems since last summer, culminating in a loss of contact in early December. Communications with it were reestablished late last month and controllers in Russia have been trying to recover systems on the craft, but it was reported yesterday that their efforts have so far failed.

    Coronas-Photon logo

Researchers agree that the loss of Coronas-Photon will leave a hole in solar research. "There is nothing yet planned by NASA or ESA [the European Space Agency] that will reproduce all of the Coronas measurements, at least not within the next decade or so," says Lyndsay Fletcher of the University of Glasgow in the United Kingdom.

The probe was launched on 30 January 2009 for what was meant to be a 3-year mission. But in July, as the craft's orbit went into a phase that took it increasingly into the shadow of the earth, power supply problems began to emerge. Two onboard batteries were not providing enough power to keep systems working while in the earth's shadow, so the onboard computer was automatically shutting down systems. On 1 December 2009, the computer abandoned one of the batteries completely and the following day communication ceased. Later in the month, however, the amount of time Coronas-Photon spent in the sun increased; on 29 December the craft made contact again. Despite efforts to revive the craft's systems, it remained dormant and on 18 January, when its sunlight time peaked at 72.5 minutes in every 95 minute orbit, Russian media reported that it was almost certainly dead.

    Coronas-Photon

Coronas-Photon, the third in a series of Russian solar missions, was designed to investigate several enduring mysteries of the sun, such as how its corona is heated, the mechanics of solar bursts, and the nature of solar cycles. It was also part of a worldwide effort to study the sun, known as the International Living with a Star (ILWS) program, and researchers will regret its passing. "It returned some very promising early results and it looks like there are some unique instruments on it, particularly in the hard x-ray and gamma-ray regimes," says Fletcher.

ILWS Chair Madhulika Guhathakurta of NASA's science mission directorate in Washington, D.C., agrees: "Several high energy instruments will play a critical role in the observations of the onset of energetic events like flares and Coronal Mass Ejections. Together the NASA/NOAA and international observatories and the Coronas-Photon observatory can observe the complete electromagnetic spectrum from radio to gamma-rays." That is, if the spacecraft was functioning as planned. by Daniel Clery, © 2010 American Association for the Advancement of Science. All Rights Reserved

02.01.2010 - Solar observer still kicking

The Russian scientific satellite Coronas-Photon has started transmitting signal after staying silent for several weeks. The satellite, which was feared to have gone dead, sprung to life on Tuesday after its solar panels received enough light to power its control systems, head of Russian space agency, Anatoly Perminov, told journalists.

    Coronas-Photon

He added it will take at least a week before engineers will be able to turn on its instruments, which have gone off due to power shortage. Earlier, scientists reported that Photon's battery has likely degraded and can no longer store power to run the sat when it goes through Earth's shadow. Hopes of reestablishing contact with the Russian scientific satellite Coronas-Photon are diminishing. Engineers believe the sun-observing satellite's battery has degraded and is failing to power its systems.

Sat's signal was initially lost on December 1, following six months of increasing malfunction reports. Since December 11, there was no contact with Coronas-Photon at all. Scientists believe the satellite's chemical battery, which stores power harvested by solar panels, has degraded ahead of time. They say their last chance to get in touch with the equipment will be in early January next year, when it will get a constant power supply directly from the panels thanks to an orbit that will not pass through Earth's shadow. © Autonomous Nonprofit Organization "TV-Novosti" 2005-2010.
